Healing From the Get-Go - an offering by Jerry Lamagna

We are excited to welcome AEDP senior faculty Jerry Lamagna to our first AEDP Vancouver Salon for 2026!

Jerry’s presentation will focus on healing from the get go:

  • using a first session to explore transformance detection

  • the phenomenology associated with transformance and resistance

  • use of the therapist self

  • moment to moment tracking of embodied experience

  • direct work with defenses in a first session.

Following Jerry’s talk, there will be time set aside for discussion/Q&A with Jerry regarding the concepts discussed and the process shown in the videotape.

Self as True Other in Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy -an offering facilitated by Elana Angus

In this Salon we'll explore the concept of Self as True Other and how a profound shift can happen when the client experiences their own Core Self as a True Other. Some places in the psyche are private, and sometimes the therapeutic relationship is too small of a container for necessary healing. Rather than the therapist being the source of healing contact, we’ll explore how the client’s Core Self offers safety, precisely timed wisdom, and an inner witnessing that feels real, resonant, and transformative. Psychedelic psychotherapy can increase access to Core Self. It presents a unique opportunity for us as therapists to both support and get out of the way of intrapsychic connection. Elana will show an interview with a client discussing this experience, and together we will have the opportunity to consider how to encourage and support Self as True Other, and how it can inform our work as AEDP therapists. With the unfolding of the so-called “psychedelic renaissance,” the psychedelic innovations potentially available to our clients are expanding rapidly. The AEDP Institute has stated an initiative intended to “nurture an extension of AEDP where interested and trained clinicians can unleash the potential of psychedelics to contribute to longstanding AEDP therapeutic aims including: bypassing defences, facilitating trauma processing, and deepening transformational potential​.”​

In this Salon, we will provide a broad overview of psychedelic medicines and the latest information regarding how AEDP fits into this picture.

The AEDP Vancouver Committee is excited to invite you to an in-person AEDP gathering on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 10:00 am -12:30 pm, at 237 East 4th Avenue, Vancouver, BC.

As this is the first in-person gathering since 2020, it feels right to begin by holding space together: to connect with colleagues and be 'shoulder to shoulder' again. Together, in the emergent bottom-up spirit of AEDP, we will mingle over coffee and have a circle dedicated to undoing our aloneness as clinicians, along with sharing in and vision planning for the future of our local AEDP community.

Please bring your inspiration about what AEDP means to you. What do you need from or offer to the local AEDP community? Many possibilities await to notice how we are in this work together.

We want to introduce ourselves as the Vancouver AEDP Committee and invite you to join us in co-creating our community. Let's get the heart of AEDP beating again here in Vancouver and BC!

The Healing Power of AEDP: Viewed Through the Lens of EFT

This workshop is specifically crafted for EFT-trained therapists interested in AEDP, and features extensive video examples from therapy sessions. I will explain and demonstrate AEDP theory and interventions, using language familiar to EFT therapists. We will explore commonalities and differences between the two models. Unique aspects of AEDP will be highlighted, and participants will learn how these can applied to deepen and expand EFT practice with both individuals and couples. 

Together, we will witness the power of AEDP in action, while tracking and discussing the change processes at play. We will explore the potential for synergy between AEDP and EFT.  Participating therapists will discover new ways to accelerate change, heal attachment wounds, and nurture a felt sense of security that clients take with them into their lives!

Salon: State One Interventions: Helping Clients to Feel Safe and Secure

Presenter: Ella Bolourian, MA, MC, RCC

Our AEDP State 1 interventions aim to entrain transformance strivings and the patient’s self-at-best via the therapist’s leading with her/his own self-at-best. In this presentation, Ella will share videotape of a session with a client with a history of complex trauma. Together we will witness and discuss how Ella’s therapeutic presence, moment-to-moment tracking, and attunement co-create safety in the dyad; and her timely, experiential and relational interventions lead to new, emergent experiences of connection, positive affective experiences, and transformance-based processes that feed the transformational spiral in State 1 and 2, and through to State 3 and 4. We will be invited to reflect and discuss how to foster therapeutic presence in working with our clients as well as how to work with challenges we may experience in bringing our full, embodied presence to the therapeutic process.

SALON: Being together in the Strangeness of Positive Change

Presenter: Richard Harrison, PhD

Together we will view and discuss State 3 AEDP work with a relatively new patient who experienced a powerful sense of freedom and accomplishment early in treatment, after having processed emotions related to an abusive romantic relationship, for which she had always held herself to blame. We will witness and identify emergent State 3 transformational affects (pride and joy, gratitude and awe, tremulousness, grief for self, realization, enlivenment) that spontaneously arise through metaprocessing, as well as the patient’s inner working models of attachment, which begin to shift before our eyes. We will also explore important choice points that arise for the therapist in the unfolding transformational process.
